Drinking from the Stern Kool-Aid. "I make a lot of money therefore I'm great". Bob Guccione made a lot of money too. So did A-Rod. Money doesn't necessarily "indicate popularity".

What Stern did was become immensely popular with a narrow segment of the population (young adult men in the 1980's). That was (and still is) a very lucrative demo that advertisers (who could care less about content) wanted to reach. Stern never had *mass* appeal.

WABC was a mass appeal radio station. Dan Ingram was popular over a much wider base of radio listeners. Stern wouldn't have lasted a week on even the most remote Top 40 radio station. His start was at WRNW in Mt. Kisco NY which was a progressive rock station. Sloppy board work and long rambling DJ commentary was typical so his propensity to open the mic and talk and talk and talk worked. For that, he gets credit and he found a way to talk to its younger male audience by mocking everything in sight. If you want to celebrate his success based on that, you're then making a fair observation.
