I am a Stern fan since he arrived in NY. I think part of the problem is many people don't get him. He is an entertainer. While sometimes his making fun of radio people may come off as disrespectful, I don't believe that is his intent. He looks at radio in general as being the bottom of the barrel in the entertainment industry. Dan said he wasn't a fan of Stern but Howard showed up not that long after the "day the music died". Not a high point in Dan's career and I can understand why he didn't look favorably on Howard. But Stern did acknowledge Dan as a radio great. I didn't hear all of his tribute to Ingram but the parts I did hear would have made Dan smile.
Same with Allison Steele. He made fun of her show opening and poetry but she recorded plenty of bits with him. I believe she totally "got" Stern and where he was coming from..
I think Stern is one of the best celebrity interviewers out there. He asks questions many others are afraid to ask.
He is first to admit he wasn't good as adj. That's why he evolved into what we hear today and I think radio is better for it.
