Keep in mind that KFI was it's networks "primary station" for Palm Springs 75 years ago. And it still has a listenable signal in many areas that are not noise plagued.

I used to listen to KLVE often in the Desert back when, on several occasion, I was the interim PD. If I got behind hills as in parts of Palm Springs and the La Quinta Cove, no signal. But along the I-10 corridor I still get it in my car. And lots of listening in diary markets comes from stations commuters use when they are not at their home... I know lots of folks who commute into the IE daily.

The ascription rule, which hopefully will be change after its application was protested, has been in effect for a number of books. In the past, Arbitron would call to clarify such diary entries, but they apparently do not do it any more.

This just points out how much the diary can deviate from "truth" due to listener confusion about a station and Nielsen applying bad ascription policies.
