David, this is not to question anything of what you say regarding format testing. I've used music testing but I'll take your word for format research, having never done it.

But it has raised my curiosity. Where is such a market as you describe, larger than New York?

Mexico City? Tokyo? (doubt the latter)

How many stations or even clusters in such an over-saturated market (200? wow, that's an average share of all listening at half a percent per station) are financially able to afford testing? Advertising?

What are the differences in signal strength? My guess is huge.

You say a 22 percent debut was achieved with a new format. Was this really a case of a dominant signal using their presence on the dial--and a new format to overwhelm competition, or could there have been serious questionable survey techniques involved? Maybe only a few stations bought the survey?

Am seriously interested in your feedback.

The curious thing is that you said the format testing pointed toward a format you had thought about implementing before you did the research. I'm thinking that any format hole that would garner a 22 percent share first book must have been obvious through intuition and a bit of radio background alone.
